ALGHERO

Alghero: torre della polveriera

An historical town perched on the sweep of the bay, consisting of two distinctive parts the old walled town and the new town. In the year 1353 the town and the surrounding area were attacked and taken by troops loyal to the kingdoms of Catalonia and Arragon and concequentally colonized by people from the Iberian Peninsula. The influence from this period is still very visible in the town with its Spanish style towers, churches and squares. The language of the time is still to be heard in the local dialect which is still more Spanish than Italian, the Catalonians were so fond of Alghero they called it Barceloneta or Little Barcellona. A walk along the recently restored sea wall of the town gives a wonderful panorama out over the bay and is the perfect plad to be for the sunset. Alghero is busseling town with its boulevard cafes, its shops and for the more adventurous the Discos.
